Ring alarm system🚨

I’ve had two Netatmo indoor security cameras for a few years but wasn’t happy with them. It was impossible to get them to cooperate so that the sirene didn’t go off when I got home. Besides that, there were too many false positives. The advantage of Netatmo is that every recording is saved locally on an SD card in the camera - no cloud. One of the cameras became faulty a couple of months ago, and I’ve also disconnected the

I want two things from an alarm system. I want to be notified if someone is in my house when I’m not home, and I want to know if I closed the garden door. One time, I forgot to close the garden door, and it was not funny being away from home and not knowing whether or not the door was shut. I have looked for replacements for the Netatmo system, but I’m unhappy about the cloud solutions. Meanwhile, I’ve become satisfied with the Ring camera and doorbell I purchased. So, when I received an offer for their alarm system, I bought it.

I’ve put up two motion sensors and two door sensors. The door sensors are much better than the ones from Netatmo, and the motion sensors don’t give false positives, so I’m happy overall. I still need to fine-tune the system, but in general, everything works smoothly. The default setting is to allow me 30 seconds to disarm the system when I get home, but I’ve changed that, so everything goes to sleep mode for 15 minutes when I get near the house. That way, I can take my time when I get home with my hands full without panicking because I only have 30 seconds to disarm the system.

The only thing that annoys me now is the chime I bought with the doorbell. It keeps on chiming even though the doorbell is in sleep mode. I think that it’s me who doesn’t know how to fix it. 😃

A mess in the big band 🎺

Our conductor has told us that he wants a break, which has caused some chaos in the big band. I’m confused about why it happens now because the conductor told us this a year ago. Apparently, the committee has been sleeping because they haven’t prepared anything. Or, more correctly, they expected everyone in the big to play without a conductor for some time. But why haven’t they asked us?

I don’t understand how it is possible to be so narrow-minded that you don’t ask the members what they want when the conductor takes a break but instead assume that everyone wants the same thing as yourself. It turns out that many of the members, including me, don’t want to show up unless a conductor is present. Why haven’t we talked about this in the fall? And why hasn’t the committee asked for the prerequisites for people to keep showing up? And they should also have asked if people were willing to pay for a professional conductor.

There has been a professional conductor the last two times, and I think it’s fantastic. He is nice and has a great way of correcting us. It’s relaxed and friendly, and nobody feels singled out. There are rumors about people not wanting to pay for a conductor, and some think having a conductor for every rehearsal is unnecessary. Well, it is necessary because he has focused on teaching us how to play swing. It’s an indication that we need a lot of basic knowledge, and it’s about time we get professional help. But not all agree with that. I’m excited to see how it all ends.

A little color on the dining table 🍽️

Sometimes, I ask too much about the inventory in my home. I’m very happy with my dining table with a white laminate surface, but when the felt mats I want for it can only be bought in grey, the table becomes colorless and dull.

This Christmas, I bought a table runner with gold stars that looked very pretty, so I bought a ‘real’ table runner to give the table some color. Of course, I need different colors depending on my mood or the season, so I’m looking for a yellow one for easter.

New kind of reeds 🎷

I have used synthetic reeds on my saxophone for more than ten years. I was in a German music store called Thomann when I asked the salesperson which synthetic reeds they would recommend because there was a lot to choose from. The salesperson gave me only one choice - Legere Signature - and I haven’t regretted that decision. A couple of years ago, Legere launched a new reed - American Cut - which I have used ever since. Recently, they launched French Cut, and I had to try them.

I have tested the different reeds the last couple of days, and I have been a little stumped. The reed that I like the least is the American Cut, which surprises me a lot because I compared the American Cut to the Signature last year, and at that time, I preferred the American Cut. Well, I guess I’m allowed to change my mind. I like both the Signature and the French Cut. It is hard to describe, and I’m sure that others will explain the difference in other ways, but according to my ears, the Signature reed is more soft at the edge of the sound while the French Cut is more sharp. I’m not saying the French Cut doesn’t have a dark sound - it’s just more defined. I will play on the Signature reed again for now, but the French Cut may be more suitable for the big band. Time will tell.

Cleaning of my car 🚗

Steamrex has cleaned my car. I have been looking at the company’s homepage for about six months because I like the idea of them coming to me instead of me going to them. Also, I was not satisfied with the last cleaning by another company.

The guy showed up half an hour early, but that is ok with me. I work from home that day, so it doesn’t matter when he shows up. He started cleaning the car, and to my surprise, it took him one and a half hours to finish. The result is stunning. The car is cleaner and shinier than when the other company cleaned it. The inside of the car was cleaned, too, and I can’t complain about anything - not even the price.

It will not be the last time that I contact Steamrex. I’m looking forward to driving around in the car and enjoying the clean windshield - it hasn’t been adequately cleaned the last couple of times.

A new type of rechargeable batteries 🔋

I have three LED candles in every bathroom window in the winter, and I have tried to use rechargeable batteries, but it was a flop. First of all, the light was not very bright. Secondly, the batteries didn’t last very long. That is why I use normal batteries. Normal batteries last two weeks, which sums up to a lot of batteries during the winter, and I want to be more environmentally friendly.

Last fall, I saw a commercial for a new kind of rechargeable battery. The battery didn’t require a special charger, and they were on 1,5 V. I bought a package of four to try them out, and they were a success. I couldn’t distinguish the candles with rechargeable batteries from the ones with normal batteries. The only difference was that the rechargeable batteries only lasted one week. Since they are rechargeable, it is okay, and they only take two hours to recharge.

The downside of the new battery type is that they are expensive; they are approximately twice as expensive as normal 1,2 V rechargeable batteries. But I bought them anyway for my LED candles. I’m happy I don’t have to buy many normal batteries for the next many winters.

Great start on the year 👍

I’m pleased about the start of the year. I’ve been able to do more than I’ve been doing in the last couple of years. When I look back on January, I’m happy.

I’ve been doing status over my goals and habits during January and discovered that I need to change how I do things. First, I must turn down my expectations regarding my habits. I want to complete my goals - even on bad days. If I have a day with migraine or if I have a day where I don’t want to do anything, I still have to be able to complete my goals. I’m looking forward to seeing how I manage in February.

I’ve started spring cleaning the house, and it’s about time. In the past, I did it during the year so that every room was deeply cleaned every year. I want to do that again. But I’ve also considered reducing the frequency, so I do it every second year.

I’ve also considered my dream of a homepage with reviews of play-along sheet music in January. I’ve realized that I have too many projects in progress. I’ve decided to complete two of my projects before July 1st before I start building a new homepage. The first project is to write all the missing blog posts for this homepage. The second project is to reorganize my sheet music. After completing those two projects, I’ll have time to make a new homepage. I’ll most likely also have to reduce the number of blog posts on this homepage, which is ok.

What I’ve not done during January is play music. I need to play more regularly again. I aim to play a couple of melodies without the sheet music, and I haven’t started yet. And then I created one more project :-) Well, I’m starting to plan the missing blog posts before I plan the music.

A little worktalk 👩‍💻

For the last month, I have been working on forms at work. We call out automated processes for forms. To be honest, it is nothing more than PowerShell scripts behind the scenes.

I think it is fun to get scripts to do the things that I want them to. And then something doesn’t turn out like I expect it to, so I have to dig a little deeper to get perfect. I love that kind of job. The result is that my happiness for my work has risen. Before, the days were a lot of maintenance, so it is nice to have a change of scenery.

I have also created a couple of scripts to install Edge and Edge WebView2 Runtime with ConfigMgr, which have made it a lot easier for me. It was about time because when I have done something ten times, it is time to create scripts to do the work so I can use my time on something else. Hopefully, 2024 will bring more tasks like this.

New shopping bag 🛍️

I have used a backpack for grocery shopping for more than fifteen years. Normally, I walk to the supermarket, which is perfect with a backpack. But, it hasn’t been ideal when I use the self-service checkouts because it’s not easy to carry the backpack and put groceries in it while scanning the items with my phone. But I have made it work.

When I came home a couple of weeks ago after grocery shopping, I discovered the backpack was falling apart. The seams were unraveling in several places, so it was time to get a new shopping bag. I started looking for a replacement on my favorite homepage - Amazon. Well, it’s not entirely true because I also looked at Danish websites with backpacks, but they only sold backpacks with rooms for laptops, and that is not practical for shopping.

After some time, I found a bag with handles and shoulder straps. The shoulder straps were not padded, but on the other hand, it was a cheap bag, so I decided that it was worth a try. I wanted to test whether or not the normal handle would make the bag more suited for shopping with self-service checkout.

I have received and tested the shopping bag, and it passed all the tests. It was easy to put the groceries in the bag while scanning them with my phone, and the unpadded shoulder straps were not as bad as I feared. The only thing that is a little annoying is that the bag is very lively and it is difficult to close with one hand, but I’ll find a solution. This first time, I put the bag on the ground and used both hands to close it.

New hearing protection 🎧

I have bought a pair of AirPod Pro and have been very excited to see if they would be a good fit for me. I have always had problems with in-ear headphones because they don’t fit my ears, and every time I go for a walk, they fall out - especially if I have to look both ways before crossing a road. They are also supposed to function as earplugs when I play music. It is high time that I start protecting my ears. And lastly, I want to use them for listening to music and audiobooks.

First, I haven’t finished testing the different tips to find the ones that best fit me. I had big problems with changing tips because I couldn’t detach the default ones. Even though I watched several how-to videos, I still had problems getting them off. In my opinion, they were stuck. After a couple of weeks, I could finally change them to a smaller size. It needs more testing because the left one still does not fit me perfectly, but I’m confident I’ll find a solution. I have also looked for unoriginal ones made of foam that might be a better fit for me. As I said, I’m still testing the tips.

They are fantastic for music and audiobooks. I love the realistic sound they produce, so I approve of them for that purpose. I also approve them for my music performances. I love all the possibilities of adjustments, but at the moment, I’m using the default settings. I’m still fumbling around the menus when we start playing music. Sometimes, I turn on noise cancellation, making it very difficult to hear my fellow musicians.

I have also discovered that the AirPods are perfect for me when I need peace and quiet, whether at work or on the train. It is unnecessary to play semi-loud music to shut out the noise; it is possible to use them as earplugs. I was on my way home on the train one day while having a minor migraine, so I most of all needed some quiet. Four to five happy teenage girls entered the train and started chatting. Please don’t misunderstand me. Usually, that wouldn’t bother me, but I wanted to kick them out of the train at that time. Instead, I put on my AirPods and activated noise cancellation, and everything went almost silent. The noise from the train was also dampened, and suddenly, the train ride home was comfortable. The experience was so positive that the money I spent on the AirPods was well worth it.
